Experience the deer rut in Saxon Switzerland

vThe Wild Animal of the Year—the red deer—is the central theme of this evening excursion during the rutting season of these majestic animals.

When the forests echo with the bellowing of the stags, the male red deer engage in a spectacular competition for the attention of the does. At dusk, armed with plenty of interesting facts, we’ll set out into the countryside around Hinterhermsdorf in search of the king of the forest.

Why this title isn’t entirely accurate, what “Bambi” actually is, how to recognize a young stag, and much more—you’ll learn all this during the walking tour.

Our experts will present the results of the REDEMA research project, which has been studying the behavior of red deer and its impact on the national park since 2023. Our biologists specializing in wildlife will provide you with insight into modern methods of wildlife research.

This event is part of the Czech-German REDEMA project.

We recommend wearing sturdy shoes for this event and—if you have them—bringing binoculars!
