How much do red deer and roe deer nibble on small trees? Which tree species do they like the most? Does this damage affect the future composition of the forest? And has the damage to individual tree species decreased with the presence of wolves, which reduce deer populations? These are precisely the questions that the joint WoBoFE project, on which we cooperate with the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, the Bavarian Forest National Park and the Bavarian State Research Institute, aims to answer. Monitoring of small tree nibbling took place this spring in 657 research areas across the entire national park. In total, we measured over 50,000 trees (determining the tree species, height and type of damage). We can look forward to the results next year.
