For over half a year, camera traps have been monitoring wolf prey in the Šumava terrain as part of the WoBoFE project (Ecological impacts of the return of wolves to the Šumava/Bavarian Forest ecosystem). We visited them before the summer to download the data. Of the 300 camera traps installed, four were stolen and seven stopped working for various reasons. The remaining camera traps collected over 600 GB of data, which we will now start processing. Artificial intelligence will help us get rid of photos we don't need (photos of people or, conversely, empty photos). We need to go through the remaining photos and assign information about the species of animal, age group, gender, number of animals in the photo, etc., to them so that we can calculate the density of wolf prey. Given the volume of data, this will take weeks, but we are already bringing you a taste of what the camera traps have captured in the Šumava forests.
